Remembering Chris Hodges
Some people love a sport. Others are shaped by it in ways that reach far beyond the field. For Chris Hodges, baseball was never just a game - it was a lens through which he understood hard work, connection, and the responsibility we carry to lift others up.
Chris grew up in Jackson Hole, where he played throughout his youth and into college before injuries brought his playing days to a close. Rather than walk away from the game, he walked toward it differently - as a coach, a mentor, and an advocate for young players who needed someone in their corner. He had a natural gift for teaching, but more than that, he had the kind of genuine warmth that made people around him want to be better. Former players and fellow coaches remember a man who gave freely of his time and knowledge, who took real pride in watching others grow, and who showed up for people on and off the diamond with equal enthusiasm.
Chris passed away in a tragic accident in 2016. He was 30 years old.
In the years since, those who loved him have worked to ensure that his spirit - generous, competitive, and deeply invested in the next generation - continues to find expression in the community he called home. The Chris Hodges Memorial Fund was founded in 2017 with that purpose at its core: to provide financial support to individuals and organizations dedicated to helping young people pursue their dreams and develop as both athletes and human beings. Each year, the Fund awards scholarships to deserving student athletes from the Jackson Hole area, and it has become a meaningful fixture in the local sports community.
Perhaps nowhere is Chris's legacy more alive than at the annual Chris Hodges Baseball Camp, hosted each summer by Jackson Hole Youth Baseball. The week-long camp brings together players ages 7–12 for a full immersion in the game - working on fundamentals in the morning, studying strategy and film at midday, and putting it all into practice through live gameplay in the afternoon. It is exactly the kind of program Chris would have poured himself into: structured enough to develop real skills, but rooted in the joy of the game and the friendships built around it. Jackson Hole Youth Baseball is committed to keeping the camp accessible to every family, regardless of financial circumstances, because Chris believed that opportunity shouldn't have a price tag.
The Chris Hodges Memorial Fund makes that camp possible. It is a fitting tribute - a living, active investment in the kids of this valley. That's how Chris would have wanted it.
